TWA College Football Names Shon Mitchell as Head Coach

AUSTIN, Texas — TWA College Football is proud to announce the appointment of Shon Mitchell as its new head football coach, effective immediately.

A former standout running back at the University of Texas and a veteran of the National Football League (San Francisco 49ers), Mitchell brings an impressive resume and a wealth of football knowledge to the Battlecat program.

“We are excited for the future of TWA College Football under the direction of Coach Shon Mitchell,” said Patrick Wright, Director of TWA College Football. “His leadership and experience will be a tremendous asset to our student-athletes and our growing program.”

This marks Mitchell’s first collegiate head coaching position. Since concluding his playing career, he has remained actively involved in athlete development through his “A Step Faster” Speed and Agility Academy, where he trains athletes across multiple disciplines and levels. His strong relationships at the local, state, and national levels position him well to recruit top-tier talent and lead fundraising efforts that will help elevate the program’s profile.

“Shon Mitchell’s leadership and dedication to student development make him the ideal choice to guide our football program forward,” said TWA Board Member Chris Nielsen. “We look forward to seeing the impact of his vision both on the field and in the classroom.”

An Austin native, Mitchell made headlines early in his career by breaking an 18-year-old Austin Independent School District rushing record. He went on to earn second-team Junior College All-American honors at Blinn College before transferring to the University of Texas. In 1995, he was named the Southwestern Conference Newcomer of the Year after becoming only the sixth Longhorn in history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season. His professional career spanned the NFL, NFL Europe (London Monarchs), and the Arena League (Tulsa Talons and River City Renegades).

As head coach, Mitchell will lead the Battlecats in their pursuit to become a premier team within the Independent Collegiate Athletic Association (ICAA) SWIC division. Last season, the team missed a playoff berth despite earning six All-Conference First Team selections.
